ABSTRACT:
Databases are well known for dealing with relational data. Some like Oracle and Postgres can also deal with Object data, but support it to varying degrees. In the last five years there has been a massive increase in multimedia usage and the pain of managing it is only now starting to be experienced. What is not well known by many is that one database (Oracle) is equipped to deal with multimedia and provides a great platform for storing and working with these digital objects. This presentation will cover the basics on multimedia in a database. It will cover terminology, architectures, warehouses, search engines, social network integration, indexing and methods for best working in this new and exciting environment.

Marcelle Kratochvil is CTO for Piction and is based in Canberra, Australia. She is an acknowledged world expert in managing unstructured data in a database. She is both a full time DBA and Developer working on multiple sites, multiple versions of Oracle across multiple operating systems. As both an active DBA and Developer she has a unique perspective of both roles consistently dealing, liaising and working with people in both these groups as well as system and network administration. Her book "Managing Unstructured Data in the Oracle Database" describes a revolutionary approach to the management of Oracle databases containing unstructured data. Marcelle has been using the Oracle database for the past twenty four years and originally began using Oracle with V5 on MVS and VMS. She has been awarded PL/SQL Developer of the year in 2004, and has won awards for development of a shipping system and a state government digital asset management system.
Over the last fourteen years Marcelle has been involved in the core development of Piction and has been involved in the installation and management of this product in countries around the world. In addition to the development of Piction, Marcelle has also been involved in the running of Oracle DBA and Development training courses.
