PV hot water

Project Code: CECS_1175

This project is available at the following levels:

Supervisor:

Professor Andrew Blakers

Outline:

30. What is the cheapest way to supply domestic hot water? Common options for hot water are gas, off-peak electricity, solar water heaters and PV heat (PV electricity is used to heat water in an ordinary ground mounted hot water tank). Solar water heaters are more efficient than PV heat, but also more expensive. Further, excess summer heat production has no value, whereas excess summer PV production can be fed into the grid and is paid for via a feed-in tariff. For this project, compare and contrast the various ways (solar, gas, electric, without/without heat pumps) to produce hot water for different capital cities and various hot water load profiles.
