Computer vision expert selected for prestigious chair by French government - by Heather McEwen
One of the College's leading academics, Professor Richard Hartley, in the Computer Vision and Robotics Group has been appointed honorary chair at the Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The prestigious appointment enables Professor Hartley to explore his research in medical image analysis further, and strengthens his connections with colleagues in computer vision in Europe where he will spend at least eight months of his appointment. The chair also provides funding for two postdoctoral staff and a graduate student for two years.
"This is excellent news for the College," said Professor Chris Baker, Dean. "It demonstrates one of the many ways in which we can diversify our research funding, and is a good example of the way in which the College can meet its commitment to further internationalise its research agenda and grow its research base in dynamic new areas."
The College will also host visits by the postdoctoral staff for eight months of their tenure, providing excellent opportunities to increase research output in the Computer Vision and Robotics Group.
"I'm sure that all College staff and students will join me in congratulating Professor Hartley on his selection," said Professor Baker.
In other good news for the Computer Vision and Robotics Group, Dr Roy Featherstone has been awarded a Visiting Professorship at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. He intends to spend one month there in June-July 2010 visiting Prof Vincent Haywood, one of the world experts in haptics. Roy's plan for this visit is to enhance his research profile in the area of humanoid robotics.
