Innovative staff and students win awards

College staff and students recently won two awards for student projects and innovation in software engineering and digital mapping.

One entry to the inaugural Australian Computer Society 'Aspire, Achieve, Advance' awards came from a team of third and fourth-year software engineering students in the School of Computer Science. They developed a web-based database for elite cyclists to enable statistical analysis and record keeping to assist in tuning and optimising the set-up of bikes for athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

The judges said that the team "delivered a thorough, robust, high-quality application that has the potential to benefit its client, the AIS, and the community. The team members have shown high level of dedication and diligence. They have demonstrated exceptional leadership and interpersonal skill, as well as agility and flexibility in engagement with government agencies and multitude of stakeholders. The execution of this project was well above that typically expected of student projects and, as a result, has developed a viable and exciting product/service attracting interest from both public and private sectors."

Another entry from the NICTA Automap team, headed by ANU adjunct Lars Petersson won the Innovation Award for the development of a product yet to be commercialised. Automap detects and classifies geometric shapes from video footage which is then sent to GPS providers to keep their maps up-to-date.
