Students showcase their engineering projects

More than eighty final year engineering students undertook their individual project in 2007, and they condensed their work into seminar presentations, and a poster display at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science on 11 and 12 September 2007.

"With this many students there is an enormous range of project topics covering all of the major engineering disciplines and research areas in the College and beyond," said Dr Haley Jones, Lecturer in Engineering, who coordinated the engineering projects.

Many students have supervisors from within the Department of Engineering and other departments within the College. They also find supervisors in industry, with one student this year undertaking his project as part of a placement in Switzerland.

"The number, calibre, and expertise of academic supervisors for undergraduate students studying the Engineering degree demonstrates the cross-disciplinary nature of the Systems Engineering approach that is taught at ANU," said Dr Jones.

Project topics included nanomaterials, optics, grey water recycling, bluetooth, solar cells, telecommunications networks, energy analyses of commercial buildings and even a solar-powered water pump for a remote village in Nepal (an Engineers Without Borders project).

As part of the assessment for the projects, students write a two-page extended abstract, a 50-page thesis, present a 15-minute seminar, and design a poster. The project is the culmination of four or five years of study and allows students to put into practice many of the skills that they have learned during their degree.

"I am very pleased that this year's projects attracted so many positive comments, particularly from people outside the college, about the high quality of the seminar and poster presentations," said Dr Jones.

"This is an excellent endorsement of the work and efforts of staff and students in the Department of Engineering, as part of the Bachelor of Engineering degree, and our unique Systems Engineering approach. Congratulations to all our students."
